Executive Chef

Thomas Vance is the Executive Chef of The Independent, an elevated, coastal restaurant located within The George Hotel in Georgetown, SC. A fan of simple, fresh ingredients that speak for themselves, Chef Vance looks forward to working with nearby farmers and fisherman to highlight local flavors with a modern approach.

Growing up in a large family, Vance’s fondest memories growing up were spent in the kitchen or around the table with his family. His interest in cooking was originally established by his mother’s Sunday “gravy” and grandmother’s hand rolled meatballs, which taught him the importance of cuisine in both culture and family. Vance studied at The Art Institute in Charleston, SC, s. He joins The Independent after working as the Executive Chef at several well-known Charlotte, NC restaurants, including highly celebrated Little Mamas, former fine-dining institution Carpe Diem, and French-inspired George’s Brasserie.

When Vance is not at The George, you can find him riding his Harley Davidson, grilling out, or enjoying Georgetown’s nearby access to the beach, either fishing or surfing.
